- Turned the #1 drop-off (“Insufficient TRX”) into the signature flow: fees paid in the USDT you already hold.
- Halved the per-transfer fee, 7 → 3.5 TRX, with a pre-bought Energy flow.
Overview
USDT on Tron, finally usable by normal people.
USDT on Tron is the most-used stablecoin rail on earth: remittances, savings, freelance payouts. But the wallets serving it are built for crypto natives.
GasLess is the opposite: sign in with an account you already have, hold only dollars, and let the app pay gas, buy energy and confirm transfers in the background.

Problems & solutions.
Three barriers stand between a first-time user and their first dollar sent. Each one got a direct design answer.
Problem
Seed-phrase anxiety
New users are handed 12 secret words and a threat: lose them and the money is gone forever. It’s the single biggest reason people quit before their first transfer.
Solution
Social login + MPC
Sign in with Apple or Google. The private key is generated in secure hardware and split into three parts, and nobody, GasLess included, can move funds alone. Self-custody, no words to lose.
Problem
The gas catch-22
A wallet can hold $2,000 in USDT and still move nothing, because fees are paid in TRX, a second token the user doesn’t have and can’t buy without… TRX.
Solution
Pay fees in USDT
The app detects the missing TRX before the transaction fails and buys exactly enough energy, priced in the USDT the user already holds. The blocker becomes one tap.
Problem
Fees that bleed
A standard USDT transfer burns ~7 TRX (≈$2.2). For people sending $50–$200 at a time, that’s a visible tax on every single payment.
Solution
Energy, the fee halved
Pre-buying TRON energy drops the per-transfer cost to 3.5 TRX (≈$1.1). The screen sells the saving, not the mechanism: pick a bundle, see the exact cost per send.
Research
Before the first pixel: understanding real needs.
I mapped the real send journey end to end and pulled apart the wallets people already use. The goal wasn’t to hide the blockchain, it was to find every point where it leaks into the interface and either remove it or translate it.
That framing decided everything downstream: which steps to automate, which to explain, and which failure states deserved to become features.

Built for traders, not for people sending money home.
I tore down the wallets serving USDT on Tron, the big self-custody names and the Tron-native ones. Every one optimises for traders: charts, swaps, seed-phrase rituals.
Every wallet was built for crypto natives, none for the person just trying to send money home.

From flows to a calm, legible interface.
The product had to feel like restraint: white surfaces, one accent, big legible numbers. Green is reserved for value and success, it never decorates.
The send flow became the spine of the design: one decision point, zero dead-ends, and the “no TRX” branch looping back into the happy path in three automated steps.

The dead-end became the signature move.
Where other wallets fail, GasLess detects the missing TRX, prices three top-up presets in the USDT the user already holds, runs the energy purchase in the background with live status, and completes the original transfer. One wall, zero dropped users.

Fuel-gauge balance
Balance in dollars with a live count of how many transfers your TRX still covers. The number people care about is not the token amount, it is “how many sends do I have left”.

What this project taught me.
Design the failure first
The most valuable screen in the app is an error state. Treating “Insufficient TRX” as the hero flow, not an edge case, shaped the entire product narrative.
Translate, don’t hide
Users don’t need the blockchain hidden, they need it translated. “How many sends your TRX covers” beats hiding the fee and surprising people later.
States are the craft
40+ screens, and the ones that earn trust are the lockouts, the tooltips, the empty referral tab. Next time I’d prototype the processing states even earlier.
Impact
A better experience for everyday money.
GasLess ships on iOS as a non-custodial wallet with social login and an MPC key. The signature “pay gas in USDT” flow turned the industry’s highest drop-off moment into the reason people stay. Every number below is a product number, not a vanity metric.
